When I was a new believer in Jamaica in the early 1970’s I was discipled primarily by Robert Levy, a young businessman, and by Jeff Imbach, a young missionary from Canada. I was later discipled by famous Christian leaders in Switzerland, England, and the USA; but it was primarily Robert and Jeff, and other missionaries who taught at Jamaica Bible College, who taught me the basic teachings of the faith and gave me a foundation which my later mentors were able to build on.
God started a movement among the young businessmen and professionals in Kingston, Jamaica. Initially there were only Robert, his brother Phillip, Richard Hanna, and a few years later God added me to the group. Then a miracle happened within about 18 months of my conversion, our group grew to nearly 200 new converts involved in about 20 small group Bible studies. Jeff had studied how powerful small group dynamics were, and he helped us to put these principles into practice.
Why did we have so many small groups instead of simply meeting in a large room in a club, hotel, or church? Because one of the only ways that we can practice “community” is in the context of small groups. At that time the idea of community and small groups was a new idea in traditional churches. Our small groups ranged from a weekly lunch in the executive dining room of my law firm, and breakfast meetings at a Country Club, to meetings with mechanics at a car repair shop, and meetings at a construction site for the construction workers, and numerous home Bible Studies. By necessity most of the small group leaders were new believers, but we would meet weekly with Jeff for ongoing training and help in answering all the questions we were getting in the small groups.
What is community? Community is primarily a small group of people loving “one another” in such a deep and intimate way that makes it almost impossible to do in a large group. The immediate family is one of the best examples of “community” in all societies, but God wants to see this intimacy and love also in our “spiritual family”. It is only within a small group that we can have real intimacy which enables us to practice the “one-another commandments” which we see practiced in the early church which did not have church buildings, but met in homes.
